Often confused as being one in the same, there are subtle yet very defined differences in what are Modern and Contemporary interior designs.
Contemporary design incorporates lots of colour and texture where Modern design uses less colour and texture and is more impressionistic rather than functional or structured.
odern furniture combines clean lines and unique shapes. Furniture is very streamlined and uses upholster leathers, fabrics , chrome, glass and plastics. Colours are generally neutral, with the occassonal bursts of color in chairs and sofas.
Modern designs often incorporate basic geometric shapes in decorative accents such as oversized round chrome accessories, square-edged furnishings and rectangular patterned rugs and artwork. Wall colours are light and highly reflective including white-based greens, teals and blues as well as stark white and silver.
Contemporary designs call for softer lines and an emphasis on comfortable texture. Everything from glass, metal and stone are seen in pitted floor tiles and accessories to soft sofa fabrics from cotton, wool and soft kid leathers. Wall colours are warm and rich in the medium intensity range including dark yellows/mustards, warm greens, blues and light greys. Furniture is clean and smooth lines however comfort is the primary pre-requisite for this design style. Therefore deep and oversized pieces are often seen as centrepieces in a Contemporary interior design.
