I have a standard size window in my bedroom, about 1.2m high. I want to put curtains on these windows to soften the room. Should I stop the curtains just below the window or should they fall to the floor?

Definitely to the floor!! Its almost a sin in the blind industry to finish your curtains in the middle of a wall.
Even though the window isnt full lenth, the curtains being full length will give the appearance of a higher ceiling.
